To meet the needs of Web applications, which must extend across multiple servers, Oracle has RAC, Active Data Guard, and now Sharding. But new distributed databases have emerged, first in « NoSQL » like Cassandra, then now by integrating SQL and ACID properties. Google has a Cloud solution with Spanner. Others are looking for a cross-platform solution, and with PostgreSQL compatibility such as: CockroachDB or YugaByteDB.

Franck Pachot, CERN

As the companies move into more complex systems of data management, the role of data egnineer becomes extremely important. Working with big data sets requires much higher technical bar than just managing relational databases. In this session you will learn the job duties of a data engineer and get list of tools and applications that are used on daily basis including Cloudera, Hadoop, Kafka, Pig, Spark, Hive, Impala, Cassandra, HBase.

Kamran Agayev, AzerCell

SQL is really powerful but it seems it’s a well hidden secret! Let’s go public about it!
Have you ever had the curiosity to read the SQL standard ? If no, why ? Do you think it’s too complicated ? Is it really ? I don’t think so.
This conf talk will guide you through the SQL standard so you understand it’s quite readable and that there are a lot of « new » features (well, new since 1992) that you don’t know of and that could make your life so much easier!

Lætitia Avrot, EntrepriseDB

The same principles and measures of database security can be implemented in container databases as in normal single-tenant environments. However, if the container databases are to be used securely by various tenants with more or less high system privileges, additional security measures are required. The aim of this presentation is to evaluate database security in the focus of container databases and to discuss appropriate measures.

Stefan Oehrli, Trivadis

« Property Graph » databases: often it’s a very theoretical topic with lot of words and potential use cases. But how to build and use them for real? How to get started? Nothing better than this full live-demo session on Property Graphs!

Gianni Ceresa, DATAlysis GmbH

A DBA-Bear awakens after hibernation: a lot of new creatures buzzing around: Open Source, AI, Big Data, IOT, Cloud Computing; Lean, SaFe and DevOps mushrooms everywhere. Are we an endangered species, or is it only a new step in our evolution?
What’s the impact of « Cloud First », Multicloud, Autonomous Database, which are the shifts in our mindset necessary to embrace this change, who the new fellow travelers?
I will address these questions building on the experience of 9 years at Mobiliar.

Paolo Kreth, Oracle Schweiz and Thomas Baumann, Die Mobiliar

Tuning a database system mostly comes down to the same areas, no matter which database system it is about: Optimizer features/bugs, badly written SQL, understanding database parameters and as a final resort: Storage and operating system (mis-)configuration. PostgreSQL is no exception to that but when you try to tune PostgreSQL with a pure 20 years Oracle background there are some similarities but also major differences.

Hervé Schweitzer, dbi Services

This session explores the platform built for Co-op’s mission-critical logistics network including Oracle RAC, Active Data Guard, GI bundled agents and Database File System combined with Oracle Multitenant and GoldenGate 19c microservices in Maximum Availability Architecture configuration, providing real-time replication between operational and analytical systems and the ability to upgrade without downtime. It also examines how the platform evolved by incorporating Oracle Autonomous Database.

From cloud entry to Data Engineering to Data Science
Everybody has read about all the usual buzzwords endlessly. Yet how do these translate into what’s actually available in the products and how are they really being used? Lets separate cut away the marketing nonsense and the empty buzzwords and GO to the cloud, DO data engineering and USE augmented analytics.

Christian Berg, Dimensionality

We use to think that presentation is just the side effect of our actual work. Partly it’s true. I’m working in the company that creates prese
ntations and sometimes I don’t have time for it. But on the other hand, If you won’t be able to present the effects of your project in the way people get
s you, what’s the point of doing the whole project? Not always knowledge = ability to share it. In my speech I will show you some good practicies of presen
ting data – both visually and by using stories.

Luiza Nowak, Database Whisperers sp. z o.o.

Running databases with a good Disaster/Recovery strategy is a hot topic today
What about human errors such as accidental data deletion or data corruption?
Are you prepared for such a situation and did you test it?
What if we could use Docker containers for that purpose?
In this session we will have a look at the implementation details and then go through a demo to actually proof that the concept is working as expected and greatly simplifies the various recovery scenarios?

Saïd Mendi, dbi Services

For testing, development and error verification, we have always been cloning databases. This is one of the tasks that a DBA often has to perform and which can be very time-consuming. With the Multitenant architecture available since Oracle 12c, the possibilities and the procedure in this area have changed and the process is much simpler. This presentation shows various possibilities to clone pluggable databases into an existing or into another container database
