SOUG Training Day 'Haute disponibilité'

Oracle Client Failover - Under The Hood (German)
Are your Oracle databases highly available? You have deployed Real Application Clusters (RAC), DataGuard, or Failover Clusters and are well protected against server failures? Great – the prerequisites for a highly available environment are given. However, to assure that backend infrastructure failures also remain transparent to the client, an appropriate configuration is a prerequisite.
This lecture will discuss the Oracle technologies that can be used to achieve automatic client failover functionality. What are the advantages, but also the limitations of these technologies?
Speaker: Robert Bialek

Rolling Upgrade the best 12c near-zero downtime Oracle upgrade solution? (German)
Since the 12cR1 version, Oracle proposes the Rolling Upgrade functionality. It allows to perform near-to-zero downtime upgrades thanks to the transient logical standby database. However this technology was only available for upgrades starting with an Oracle database 12cR1. Now with the latest Oracle database versions available 18.104.22.168 and soon 12.2, upgrades can be done using Rolling Upgrade functionality. During this presentation the participants will see the different points to take into account in order to be able to perform easily Rolling Upgrades. This presentation will also include a Demo with a live upgrade starting from an Oracle 12cR1 using Rolling Upgrade.

Multitenant in a High Availability Environment (German)
This presentation will give an overview on the challenges when using the new Multitenant Database Architecture with Oracle RAC and Data Guard. The background of the presentation is a project where we replaced an existing 6 node stretched RAC cluster with 10 individual databases by a two node RAC cluster with Data Guard. While in the past the customer was using schema consolidation for the approx. 70 applications they decided to use the multitenant database option instead. As usual there are some limitations and challenges when moving to a brand new architecture.
Speaker: Johannes Ahrends
Johannes Ahrends passion for Oracle started in 1992 when working as a system consultant at Oracle in Düsseldorf. After a little more than six years he changed his job for a position at the company Herrmann & Lenz Services in Burscheid. He came to appreciate the Quest products Toad and Shareplex which resulted in undertaking the position of the technical director at Quest Software in Cologne. At that time he intensively attended migration projects with Shareplex and the development of Toad among others. As his favorite was still the Oracle database, in 2011 he decided to found his own company, the CarajanDB GmbH. Johannes actively participates in the DOAG since 2010 and he’s the person responsible for database administration and Standard Edition. In 2011 he was honored by Oracle with the ACE Award for my dedication. Since the release Oracle 12c he intensively deals with the new Multitenant Database architecture, especially with Oracle Real Application Clusters and Data Guard.
